Health classes explained
Rate classes from best to standard: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard—what they mean and what determines which class you get.
Term life pricing is based on rate class. Carrier names differ slightly, but the structure is standard: Preferred Plus (also Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, and table ratings for above-standard risk. Tobacco users get a separate class ladder at higher rates.
What underwriters look at
Factors reviewed: height and weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, family medical history (heart disease or cancer before age 60), driving record, prescriptions, job and hobbies, and any tobacco or nicotine use. Preferred Plus needs clean marks on nearly everything; Preferred allows some deviation; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions like controlled high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health question on the quote tool maps your answer to a class: Excellent → Preferred Plus, Very good → Preferred, Good → Standard Plus, Average → Standard. Quotes use that class; the carrier confirms after underwriting. Unsure? Quote two classes and see the difference, then apply. Overstating your health does not actually lower your final premium—it just makes the estimate wrong.
Susman Insurance Agency can help you find carriers whose underwriting guidelines are more favorable for your specific situation, which can matter more than advertised rates.
